We know this guy — let's call him "Tom." He can't stop talking about how he got his new bike. See, the last time Tom had plunked down money for a bike — a used Motobecane he got for about $200 at Maplewood Bicycle — he was in high school. Now fast-forward to 2010. Tom was thinking about getting back into cycling. Thing is, he'd never upgraded from that Motobecane. Times had changed — let's just say Tom's not in high school any more — and bike technology had changed along with them. So Tom started window shopping at the local bike shops. Damned if there aren't a lot of 'em! And the selection — is "daunting" too strong a word? And the prices! By the time Tom got around to revisiting Maplewood Bicycle, his enthusiasm for the endeavor had begun to flag. Then he met Stewart Munson, a former bike racer who'd bought the store from its original owner, Rich Morris, in 2005. Munson understood what Tom was looking for, understood about the intimidating plethora of choices and potentially unattainable price points. So when Tom said he'd just quote Munson a figure and have Munson build him a bike for that price — including used or slightly dinged parts, to keep the cost down — Munson viewed it as an interesting challenge and happily took Tom up on it. Now Tom can't stop riding — or talking about how he got his sweet ride.
