There are some lovely actresses in St. Louis, but too often you see them onstage once and then not again for a year or two, if at all. For too many women, it's too tough to sustain a body of work. If Linda Kennedy is the best actress in town, that's in large measure because her considerable talent has been nurtured by the Black Rep. The theater appreciates her, seeks out roles that stretch her. Kennedy responds to all this plenitude by crafting performances that are rarely repetitive. One play a sultry siren, the next an arthritic old woman. She has evolved into a master of immersion. Would that all actresses had such a supportive environment in which to create; Kennedy does, and she makes the most of it.
