Ben Sollee is a believer. The songs on his debut album, Learning to Bend, put a lot of faith in the idea that people are inherently good. The classically trained cellist incorporates old-timey arrangements and folksy instrumentation that pine for the past but lean on hopeful lyrical motifs to highlight the endless possibilities for the future. Sollee draws from the folk and bluegrass roots of his home state of Kentucky, but also blends touches of jazz, '60s soul and R&B to conjure a stripped-down, straight-from-the-heart simplicity that's hard to deny. Opener and fellow Kentuckian Daniel Martin Moore's music also gets by on its gentle honesty and a broken-down acoustic strum that calls to mind M. Ward. But Moore uses less studio trickery — his voice is recorded dry and unaffected, accomplishing a very unguarded and believable sound.
