Believe This!

Someone once asked, "Do you believe in magic?" And people weren't sure how to answer. Sure, they'd seen a card trick here, a rabbit in a hat there, but they wondered if those types of tricks were all that there really was to this magic business. Then came televised magic, and things got a little more complicated. No one could believe what they saw in the Bermuda Triangle and at other such notorious locales — but people questioned if that trickery was really magic or just the magic of television. Now, magic is getting a bit cooler, what with street illusionists and tattooed tricksters popping up everywhere, and folks are starting to believe more than ever before. Of course, this is an oversimplification of the magic trajectory, but there's no doubt that people like Dan Sperry (from America's Got Talent) are pushing the bounds of the art of illusion further than their predecessors and mentors. And after you witness Sperry's illusions, you won't have to puzzle any longer about whether or not you believe — because you will believe, absolutely. Sperry, the proclaimed anti-conjurer, brings his razor blades and saws, his dark humor and industrial music to the Roberts Orpheum Theater (416 North Ninth Street) for two shows this evening (at 7 and 10 p.m.). Tickets cost $27.95 to $63; visit to learn more and to make a purchase.
