Before and After Change

The older generation always tells the younger generation stories of how hard things were in their day -- walking to school in the snow, uphill, both ways -- but for African Americans, things before the Civil Rights movement really were tougher than they are now. Denise Ward-Brown gathers stories of those darker days from the people who lived them in her documentary, Jim Crow to Barack Obama. Ward-Brown spans the gap between then and now by inviting African Americans who grew up in the Jim Crow era to share their experiences with blacks younger than 30. These filmed conversations reveal how far America has come in just two generations. Jim Crow to Barack Obama screens at 7 p.m. at the Tivoli Theatre (6350 Delmar Boulevard, University City; 314-289-4152 or www.cinemastlouis.org) as part of the St. Louis Filmmakers Showcase. Tickets are $10 to $12.
