Ahh, the joys of third grade: Memorizing multiplication tables, crushing on Ricky Schroder and, of course, learning to play the recorder! While most of us progressed from "Hot Cross Buns" to "Mary Had a Little Lamb" and then shoved gum up the windpipe and allowed our plastic friend to collect dust, others found their true musical calling. So many, in fact, that they founded the St. Louis Recorder Society (www.umsl.edu/~swlong/SLURS/) for recorder enthusiasts in the metro area! Their latest concert, which impressively showcases music from the fifteenth century to the present, is at 4 p.m. Sunday, March 19, at St. Mark's Episcopal Church (4714 Clifton Avenue, 314-832-3588). And it's as free as that recorder you got back in '83.
My scare ladies: Remember kick-ass horror-punk trio Girlush Figure? The band formed in '98, released an EP and then broke up (and broke our hearts). But dry those black tears: They've reunited! As always, lead singer Squeaky is more Fromme than mouse, with a deep, resonant voice that slurs like an alto Jim Morrison; her bandmates, Rita Mae and Sami, drum-'n'-bass with the best of 'em and rock like All Hands on the Bad One was their personal tutor. Girlush Figure's reunion tour hits St. Louis with Downtrodn and Bitch Slap Barbie at 7 p.m. Sunday, March 19, at the Hi-Pointe (1001 McCausland Avenue, 314-781-4716). Seven bucks ensures admission and one helluva time.
Karaoke anarchy: So you love karaoke, but you're bored with leafing through bleak songbooks filled with Grease and Britney Spears tunes while forced to endure drunken renditions of "Paradise by the Dashboard Light." Well, it's time to stick it to The Man...The Man to whom you turn in those little pieces of paper! Punk Rock Karaoke with the Missing Member Band is live-music karaoke that lets you take the mic and twitter like a punk rocker to a selection of songs you won't be finding in the average karaoke book. Get your Johnny Rotten on at the Way Out Club (2525 South Jefferson Avenue; 314-664-7638) next Wednesday, March 22. Contact the author
