Be Your Own Hero

Peter Pranschke works with humble materials — ballpoint pen, colored pencil — to create work that reflects a thinly fictionalized version of his own humble life. His little cartoon characters trudge through life with drawing board and coffee cup, displaying a wide-eyed wonder for the world around them. And just like the heroes depicted in classic children's book illustrations, the art-world version of Pranschke rises above the normalcy of everyday life to achieve great things — how many of the other people inhabiting his work will go on to exhibit their art at the Sheldon? The latest exhibition by the talented and personable artist, Peter Pranschke: The Lonely Rainbow, hints at the solitude as well as the joy that comes with being the hero of your own story. The Lonely Rainbow opens with a free public reception from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, June 17, at the Sheldon (3648 Washington Boulevard; 314-533-9900 or www.thesheldon.org). The work remains on display through Saturday, September 10, and the gallery is open Tuesday through Saturday.
Tuesdays-Saturdays. Starts: June 17. Continues through Sept. 10, 2011
