Artistic Convictions

Given our nation's fixation on crime and punishment, it's easy to forget that our many correctional facilities (ostensibly) exist to help reform criminal behaviors, not merely to punish them. One of the better rehabilitation methods comes through encouraging creative pursuits, especially in visual arts. Insider Art, an exhibition of therapeutic art created by the incarcerated, features serene nature studies, anime-style illustrations and intimate self-portraits. The show opens with a free public reception at 7 p.m. Friday, July 30, in the gallery of Subterranean Books (6275 Delmar Boulevard, University City; 314-862-6100 or, and the work remains up runs through Sunday, September 26. Proceeds from art sales goes to Inside Dharma, a local nonprofit, non-denominational Buddhist organization that works with prisoners as well as newly released persons.
