Creation begins in the cell

Gardar Eide Einarsson is a Norwegian artist living in New York. His work references the classic ’70s punk aesthetic through the use of slogans and co-opted materials (often printed directly on the gallery walls), and he also employs the detournement method of the Situationists. These methods address Einarsson’s interest in the conflict between society’s mainstream and its various underground and divergent subcultures. For Einarsson’s current show in the Front Room of the Contemporary Art Museum St. Louis (3750 Washington Boulevard; 314-535-4660 or www.contemporarystl.org), he maximizes this conflict graphically: By spray painting a chainlink-fence pattern on the walls, Einarsson creates a holding cell. This is society’s method of dealing with the artist outside of the gallery world, and now the art patron can join him in captivity. Einarsson’s installation is on display Tuesday, June 10, through Sunday, June 22. Admission is free on Wednesday.
