Apt Pupil

An unnamed university student in modern Kazakhstan passively attends lectures -- and his own life -- in Darezhan Omirbayev's moody film Student. The title character witnesses the beating of his friend by the bodyguards of a wealthy banker and is galvanized into action. His professor extolls cutthroat capitalism as the true path, and so the student puts theory to action by robbing a grocery store and killing the shopkeeper and the only witness. Such an affront to society's laws must bring consequences, but what are those to a modern man? Inspired by Dostoyevsky's Crime and Punishment, Student forgoes the soul-searching of Raskolnikov for the bland detachment of modern life and all its hollow promises. Student screens at 7:30 p.m. at Moore Auditorium (470 East Lockwood Avenue; 314-968-7487 or www.webster.edu/filmseries). Admission is $5 to $6.
