April Smith and the Great Picture Show

9 p.m. Thursday, May 27. Off Broadway, 3509 Lemp Avenue.

April Smith and the Great Picture Show was forced to cancel its show at Off Broadway this past March when the band's touring RV — which is nicknamed Norman and has its own Twitter account — started misbehaving and stymied a Midwest tour. With a new set of wheels and a wonderful album, Songs for a Sinking Ship, in hand, the band is returning to the venue to spin songs that suggest vaudevillian folk, vocal jazz and genteel pop. Her bandmates are apt stylists, but it's Smith's voice that is the real draw: She can rattle off Motown-worthy similes with peppy gusto on "Movie Loves a Screen" and shimmy and strut like a cabaret starlet on "Can't Say No."
