Ms. Day finds cheese utopia at Saturday's Cheesefest


A few years back, Ms. Day attended a lovely party at a lovely coworker's home. Oh, it was a delightful affair: Mint juleps invigorated the guests like a cool, refreshing spring shower, and the food was more plentiful than at the best Thanksgiving dinner. Everyone there casually chatted about the weather, their dogs and their hectic lives over bowls of delicious guacamole and fresh chips and other finger-friendly foods -- that is, until the English Cotswold Double Gloucester with Chives was served. All conversations stopped except for those that revolved around this flavorful, attention-grabbing fromage: Instead of "How's work going?" it was, "How can I get my hands on more of this cheese? What kind of cheese is this? Where did you find it? Is it illegal to marry a cheese?" Now, the Double Gloucester may not be your fanciest of cheeses, but it brought so much happiness to the partygoers, and all with just a little herbed curdled milk -- and a lot of TLC.

But, of course, Cotswold isn't the only cheese that can make people so happy; all cheeses are able to bring forth at least a smile and an "mmm" belly-rub. See for yourself at this year's Cheesefest, held at the River Bottom Saloon (112 Sidney Street; 314-776-5929) on Saturday, November 5. During this cheese-tastic party, which benefits the Shriners Hospital for Children, you're bound to see many stomachs patted and mouths smiling and eating (and some people, like Ms. Day, downright cackling!), what with all the cheese activities on hand. You've got your cheese tastings (natch), a silent auction (presumably to win more cheese), wine sampling (to clear your palate between cheese nibbles), music (which may or may not be cheesy -- just kidding!), a "Just Say Cheese" photo booth and more, including mice races.

Admission to the evening of cheese costs $25 in advance ($30 at the door), and the event runs from 5 p.m. to 1 a.m. To get your tickets before all the mice and/or Double Gloucester devotees buy them up, call 314-446-2025 or e-mail -- Ms. Day
