Amadee-Us

Amadee Wohlschlaeger was a homegrown artist whose work was in almost every home in St. Louis. For 49 years his cartoons of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch's Weatherbird were front-page material, always sporting his stylish "Amadee" signature. But Amadee turned out a great deal of work that didn't fit in that small corner panel. He created illustrations and portraits for the Sporting News that revealed his economical line work and his artful use of stippling, and he also crafted portraits and caricatures of civic figures and politicians. The new exhibition A Tribute to Amadee: More Than Just the Weatherbird showcases the work of a prolific master draftsman who was himself a real character. More Than Just the Weatherbird is on display at the Central branch of the St. Louis Public Library (1301 Olive Street; 314-241-2288 or www.slpl.org) daily through Sunday, November 30. Admission is free.
Fridays, Saturdays, 10 a.m.-6 p.m.; Sundays, 1-5 p.m.; Mondays-Thursdays, 10 a.m.-9 p.m. Starts: Sept. 6. Continues through Nov. 30, 2014
