Add It Up


Motion isn't as much a part of our lives as we might think, especially for those of us who sit in cubicle world all week. Sure, our rear ends and our chairs may part ways a couple of times a day, and we definitely tap out some words on the keyboard, but those activities don't really count as motion — at least, not in the way that a dancer thinks about it. These masters of mobility consider every gesture, each jump, every flick of the finger, and they don't just think about these actions individually, but how all of them work together to form one cohesive idea and deliver one precise concept. To witness some on-message movement — and to move vicariously yourself — visit the Touhill Performing Arts Center on the University of Missouri-St. Louis campus (University Drive at Natural Bridge Road) for Sum of Motion. This fall dance concert — presented by the UMSL Department of Theatre, Dance & Media Studies — features works by students alongside those of faculty, and these pieces ought to open your eyes to our species' range of movement.
