A Well-Loved Tom

Thomas Jefferson is a man whose life has been researched, documented and discussed down to tremendous detail — you write something as outstanding as the Bill of Rights, you get that sort of attention. But there was another Thomas Jefferson, the one who went home at night and ate dinner with his wife and didn't chart a new direction for a country. Virginia Scharff examines this Jefferson, the one seen by the women in his life. Her history, The Women Jefferson Loved, examines his relationship with his mother, his wife, his mistress, and his daughters and granddaughters through the letters they exchanged over their lives, diaries and other sources. It offers a fresh perspective on a man who was many things to his nation but never its son or grandfather. Scharff reads from and discusses her book at 7 p.m. this evening at the St. Louis Public Library's Schlafly branch (225 North Euclid Avenue; 314-367-4120 or Admission is free, and books will be for sale through Left Bank.
