A Student of Lerner

Pianist and singer Steve Ross returns to town for a four-show stand at the Kranzberg Arts Center (501 North Grand Boulevard; 314-534-1111 or www.cabaretstl.com) to perform his well-received show I Remember Him Well: The Songs of Alan Jay Lerner. Ross' urbane delivery and warmth imbue Lerner's lyrics with a golden sheen that burnishes all the sweet spots. His interpretation of "Time for a Love Song" (from the not-too-successful musical Carmelina, written with Burton Lane) is a stirring call for love to rekindle passion in those who are alone and lonely. Ross marries this lesser-known gem to Camelot's famous "If Ever I Would Leave You," in which a lover ardently promises to never abandon his beloved; the result is an effortless journey from the foot of love to its summit, from strength to strength. Ross performs at 8 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday (November 4 through 7); tickets are $40 to $45.
