A Star Is Made

Louise, the girl who became American burlesque star Gypsy Rose Lee, wasn't destined for fame -- at least in her mother's eyes -- but when her favored younger sister June eloped and left the duo's vaudeville act, mom shifted the spotlight her way. The classic musical Gypsy: A Musical Fable, is based on Lee's 1957 book Gypsy: A Memoir, and it tells a fantastical version of her life story set to music and lyrics by Jule Styne and Stephen Sondheim. See Louise grow from a bit player in the family Vaudeville act to the polished star of the strip circuit thanks to the constant pressure and scheming of her mom, the original overbearing stage mother. Stray Dog Theatre presents Gypsy: A Musical Fable at 8 p.m. Thursday through Saturday (April 4 through 20) at the Tower Grove Abbey (2336 Tennessee Avenue; 314-865-1995 or There's an additional 2 p.m. matinee on the final Saturday. Tickets cost $18 to $20.
Thursdays-Saturdays. Starts: April 4. Continues through April 20, 2013
