A Solemn Ride

It seems everyone who's commuted by bicycle has a story of a close call or collision with a fast-moving car. Accidents are certainly scary, unfortunate things, and they could often be prevented with heightened awareness from all involved. May is National Bike Month, and Trailnet has dozens of rides scheduled to promote camaraderie and safe cycling. Among them is the Ride and Walk of Silence at 5:15 p.m. on Wednesday, May 16. The ride actually takes place in three satellite locations: the Missouri History Museum (Lindell Boulevard at Debaliviere Avenue), the O'Fallon Family Sports Park (301 Oberneufemann Road; O'Fallon, Illinois) and Frontier Park (500 South Riverside Drive; St. Charles). The event begins with a memorial for cyclists killed or injured in accidents, followed by a ten-mile silent ride and walk. Participants are asked to ride slow (twelve miles per hour, tops), wear helmets and abide by street laws. For more information on this or other free Trailnet rides, visit trailnet.org.
