A Safe Harbor

Emergency is a new show written by Daniel Beaty that's been wowing New York critics; now it makes its St. Louis premiere, under the auspices of the Black Rep. The play spins off a rather startling premise: A slave ship materializes in front of the Statue of Liberty in present-day New York City. The production's sole actor, Ron Conner, portrays 40 different characters ranging from a scientist, a business executive and a street vendor to a young boy from the projects, all of whom must deal with this unexpected development. Black Rep founder and stalwart presence Ron Himes directs Emergency, which is performed at 7 p.m. Thursday, 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and 2 p.m. Sunday (September 5 through 15) at the A.E. Hotchner Theatre in the Mallinckrodt Center on the Washington University campus (6445 Forsyth Boulevard; 314-534-3807 or Tickets are $10 to $25.
Thursdays-Sundays. Starts: Sept. 5. Continues through Sept. 15, 2013
