1 to 100

When Dmitry Shostakovich was but nineteen years old, he completed his first symphony, Symphony No. 1. Still considered one of the better "first" symphonies out there, it's filled with the passion and enthusiasm of a young person just starting out in life. So what better group to perform this initial foray than the members of the Saint Louis Symphony Youth Orchestra? Ranging in age from 12 to 22, the musicians are sure to have a fresh, exuberant approach to the piece, finding much that suits a young spirit in Shostakovich's flashy flourishes and the playful, stop-and-start movements of the finale. The Saint Louis Symphony Youth Orchestra performs Symphony No. 1, as well as the overture from Wagner's Rienzi and Haydn's Symphony No. 100, at 8 p.m. this evening at Powell Symphony Hall (718 North Grand Boulevard; 314-534-1700 or Tickets are $8 to $18.
