Drunk Man Denied Entry to Ballpark Village Picks Fight With Motorist, Gets Shot

A man who was shot in the chest near Ballpark Village Saturday night had been turned away from the nightlife complex for being too intoxicated shortly before the shooting, police say.

KMOV reports that the 27-year-old's incredibly bad night started just before midnight, when he and some Ballpark Village security guards had a spirited disagreement as to whether he was too drunk to be permitted entry.

As is often the case in these matters, the security guards won the argument. The man was sent on his way and began walking down Clark Avenue toward South Broadway. Apparently still riled up, he began arguing with the driver of a passing car before chasing the vehicle down and (allegedly) punching its driver multiple times in the face.

To put things mildly, that turned out to be a really bad idea. The driver, a 36-year-old man, quickly pulled a gun and shot his attacker in the chest, police say.

According to the Post-Dispatch, the driver stayed at the scene and cooperated with police. He claims he was in fear for his life.

The driver suffered minor injuries to his face but refused medical treatment. The intoxicated man was taken to the hospital in critical but stable condition.

Police say the investigation is ongoing, but one takeaway is obvious: If you're somehow too drunk for Ballpark Village (quite a feat!), you're probably too drunk to be outside of your house at all. Drink smart, St. Louis.
