The St. Louis County police department wants you to give them your drugs this Saturday — and they don't even intend to pay you for them.
This hare-brained scheme is a part of National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day, an initiative that aims to trick United States citizens into giving away their hard-earned pharmaceuticals. The DEA has led the program since 2010. Its most recent Take-Back Day, held on April 29, brought in a record-setting amount of drugs — some 900,386 pounds of pills, which police would probably say
has a street value of "like 10 billion dollars" — and for which law enforcement didn't even fork over a dime.
"Too often, unused prescription drugs find their way into the wrong hands. That's dangerous and often tragic,” acting DEA administrator Chuck Rosenberg said at the time
. “That's why it was great to see thousands of folks from across the country clean out their medicine cabinets and turn in — safely and anonymously — a record amount of prescription drugs."
Wrong hands = yours. Right hands = theirs, for free. Never mind the fact that you had to fall off a ladder or run out into traffic or jump out of an airplane with no chute in order to secure that bottle.
And honestly, it's not like they couldn't afford something
in return. With the recent passage of Prop P, officers in the county recently got a hefty pay raise
. Surely they can pay for drugs like the rest of us, right?
