Attacked at Lyon Park, Mark Swain Is Getting a Whole New Set of Teeth

After Mark Swain was attacked in south St. Louis in October by two men he believes were trying to steal his dog, he initially suffered in silence — anxiously trying to figuring out how he could afford to replace the teeth that were knocked out on his poverty-level income.

But then a chance meeting with Lucy Hannegan at her Dutchtown shop, Twice Blessed Resale, led to a GoFundMe campaign, and that led to media coverage — first on the RFT's website, then on KSDK (Channel 5).

And now not only have friends and strangers alike fulfilled Swain's funding goals (the GoFundMe tipped over its $3,500 goal last week). Now a Creve Coeur dental practice is planning to give him a whole new set of teeth.

Swain says that Clear Choice Dental Implant Center got in touch after hearing about his plight and offered its services. After a consultation yesterday, he's scheduled an appointment Thursday. And they're doing it all for free.

Swain acknowledged that it's been hard to believe his good fortune. "I'm just overwhelmed by this," he says. "There was a level of embarrassment in asking for help. My friend told me, 'That's just your ego talking.' But now it's such a relief because this has been causing me so much anxiety."

He adds, "This is like a fairy tale come true."
