A burglar stole fired at St. Louis County police with a stolen gun, police say.
A burglar armed with a handgun he stole from an 83-year-old woman's home traded gunfire with St. Louis County cops before escaping into the night, police say.
The incident began about 1:20 a.m. this morning when the elderly woman called 911 to report a prowler, police say. When officers arrived at her home in the 10400 block of Castle Drive in north county, they heard yelling from inside and then a single gunshot.
The officers forced their way in through the front, bursting inside as the burglar bolted out of the back door.
Additional cops who were still outside saw the man running with a gun in his hand. He fired at them, and they fired at him, police say. None of the officers were hit. It wasn't clear if the man was wounded. Police say he sprinted into the woods, where they lost him.
Searches by helicopter and on the ground with canine trackers came up empty. He's still at large. The woman wasn't physically injured. Police say the suspect's gun was taken from her home. They consider him armed and dangerous.
Police ask anyone with information to call them or CrimeStoppers at 866-371-TIPS.
