[VIDEOS] Blanchette Bridge Explosion-fest!

Boom goes the dynamite.
  • Boom goes the dynamite.
The westbound Blanchette Bridge was definitively blown up yesterday.

This allowed the $63 million renovation project go forward (and allowed taxpayers to pretend they were at Universal Studios).

For the time being, the eastbound span alone will perform double-duty and allow I-70 motorists to keep crossing the Missouri River between St. Louis and St. Charles.

The now-exploded westbound bridge was built in 1958, but recently had shown much wear-and-tear: Some of the steel was cracked and corroded, while the driving surface was in bad shape, according to the Missouri Department of Transportation.

So part of it was blown up last month, and the job was finished Tuesday.

The new bridge will repair/replace the old one, and will look basically the same. The westbound span should open by next Fall, MoDOT says.

Here are a few videos. Our favorite is the first, because some guy makes a funny joke.
