Phillip Stewart: Florissant Man Shot Dead Off Cherokee Street

St. Louis police are searching for clues this morning following a murder last night in a south city alley.

According to police, Phillip Anthony Stewart had left a home at around 8:04 p.m. and was standing in an alley in the 3400 block of California (above), just off Cherokee Street, when he was shot multiple times in the stomach and once in the neck.

Stewart, a 41-year-old black male from the 2500 block of Courtyard in Florissant, was pronounced dead on the scene. An investigation is ongoing.

Stewart is the city's 98th homicide of the year.

Note: This post originally reported Stewart's race as "white," which was the information given the police incident summary. In response to a comment below, we asked the police to verify the victim's race. The department tells us that they got it wrong in the incident summary. Stewart's race was African-American.
