Tig Notaro Has a Special Relationship with Taylor Dayne; Does Not with State Fairs

Comic Tig Notaro - IMAGE VIA
Tig Notaro is patient. She prefers to float subtle acerbities into a crowd and just let them marinate.

Her new CD, Good One, is the first comedy album ever to be released by indie record label Secretly Canadian. Meanwhile, she is openly not Canadian. She'll be at the Firebird on Saturday, September 3.

You've run into 90s pop singer Taylor Dayne so many times, you now have a fourteen-minute bit on her. Does she know?

She does know. Her agent called my manager to tell him so. He also said that she's a fan and would like to work together some day. I can't wait to see what working with Taylor Dayne will turn out to look like. I can't imagine it, but I also can't wait for the day!

Your comedy has a relaxed cadence - does that rhythm have anything to do with you having grown up in the south?

Maybe................... I don't know...................Probably.................

Your new CD includes, "Have Tig at Your Party" -- the human equivalent to the "burning log" DVDs -- in which you say something into the camera from time to time, as if you're there. Where did you get the idea?

I got the idea from always being on tour when my friends were having parties. One time while in my hotel room in Louisiana, I had the idea to film myself just staring into the camera and then send the tape to my friend so she could play it on the TV at her birthday party.

I didn't end up doing it, but when I told friends of mine about the idea I had, they all said I needed to make that as my DVD, so I did. I think it only comes with the hard copy, not the iTunes download. So, make sure to buy the hard copy if you want to have a stellar party.

Do you truly dig going to state fairs (as you say on your website)?

I don't even remember adding that to my website. I haven't really looked at it in a while. My web guy does updates for me, so the tiny-yet-tremendously-important details such as my like or dislike of state fairs escapes me. As I'm answering this question, I'm realizing I must not be too wild about them since I never go to them. You'd think if I really liked them, I'd have immediately answered, "YES! I love them!"

Big music festivals (like Bonaroo) are starting to include more standup. Those events have a certain free-wheeling, open feel to them, very different from the controlled environment of a comedy club. Your act is wonderfully subtle; how does it feel playing those big, wild music festivals?

I have been lucky for the most part. A few times I was really concerned how it would go, but it always ends up being a great time. Maybe I thought I liked state fairs because of how many outdoor music festivals I do. Who knows.

You're the first comedian to sign with Secretly Canadian. You've said before that there is a lot of overlap between comedy fans and music fans, but have you gotten the impression you're turning any indie rock nerds onto comedy for the first time?

I'm certain I have. On this tour in particular, a guy came up to me after the show and told me he typically doesn't get into stand-up, but he bought my CD solely based on being affiliated with Secretly Canadian and that he loved it. And came to the show. That felt pretty good.
