Alligators are not, in fact, native to Missouri. They're really more into hanging out in Florida and Louisiana.

But when cops in Independence, which is just outside Kansas City, got a call last weekend that there was a large 'gator lolling by a pond, they came out with guns a-blazin', reports United Press International.

Apparently the police called their local conservation officer, who told them to shoot the animal because there wasn't much else to be done about it.

"The officer fired two rounds, and killed my concrete, ornamental alligator," the surprised homeowner, Rick Sheridan, later told a Kansas City Fox television station. Sheridan said he'd put the lawn art out to keep children away from his pond.

Perhaps the gunfire will adequately scare the tykes away.
