Here's a gruesome follow-up to the horrifically sad story of Marquell Jackson, the eighteen-month-old found dead in a south St. Louis trash bin last week.

On Friday, the St. Louis Circuit Attorney's office filed first-degree murder charges against Marquell's mother, Melissa Jackson, 28. The probable cause statement found that Marquell's death was caused by his mother "striking or strangling him." An autopsy revealed that Marquell suffered from fractured ribs, brain trauma, neck injuries and internal bleeding. At least three of his injuries could have been fatal.

Jackson, who is currently pregnant, was also charged with felony abuse of a child. Her family and friends maintain her innocence, saying she was a loving mother who could never harm her child.
