A 49-year-old woman was hospitalized last night after being attacked on a bus in north St. Louis by a man wielding a chain as a weapon.

According to St. Louis police, the incident occurred around 7:30 p.m. in the 4000 block of West Florissant. Moments earlier a passenger -- described as a black, 59-year-old male -- boarded a Metro bus at Thrush and West Florissant and started yelling at the female passenger. At that point, another person aboard the bus struck the man, who then produced a heavy chain that he swung striking the female victim.

The woman was left bleeding from a gash in her head and taken to the hospital with a non-life-threatening injury. The suspect is in custody and could be charged later today with assault.
