Two men searching for scrap wood in the trash bins outside a St. Charles apartment got a hell'uva scare Thursday night, but it was the dashboard of their pickup truck that paid the ultimate price.

According to reports, the two men were rummaging through the dumpsters outside the Sun Valley Lake apartment complex around 9 p.m. September 9 when they were confronted by shirtless resident Scott B. Schwartz carrying a "38-inch ninja-type sword with a 28-inch blade."

The men apparently were granted permission to search the dumpsters. Schwartz, though, accused the men of being thieves and allegedly threatened to kill them.

The men ran off to their pickup truck where Schwartz caught up to them and allegedly stabbed the dashboard of the vehicle with the sword.

Schwartz, 41, was charged Friday with felony unlawful use of a weapon and misdemeanor property damage.
