Clayton police have reportedly arrested the man
they believe responsible for the mugging and sexual assault Monday morning. They're now working with Wash. U. and University City police to see if the suspect might also be involved in Sunday's armed robbery of two students.Original story follows...
University City police and Clayton cops are on the lookout for the person (or persons) who mugged two students and sexually assaulted and robbed another over the Labor Day weekend.
Police say that the suspect in both crimes matches a similar description: an African-American male approximately 5'6" to 5'8" and brandishing a dark handgun.
The first incident occurred early Sunday morning -- around 3 a.m. -- when two Washington University students were robbed at gunpoint of their wallets and cellphones near Big Bend and Lindell -- just east of campus.
The second incident occurred about a mile away on Byron Place in Clayton. Police say a 23-year-old UMSL student was getting out of her car around 12:30 a.m. Monday in the 7400 block of Byron Place when she was confronted by a suspect wearing a SLU baseball hat and believed to be between 24 and 30 years old. The man sexually assaulted the woman at gunpoint and robbed her before letting her go.
Anyone with information on the suspect(s) is encouraged to contact University City and/or Clayton police.
