Sherrell Austin: St. Louis Homicide No. 65; 21-Year-Old Shot in Chest During Hold Up

Twenty-one-year-old Sherrell Johnson was driving through north St. Louis with friends early yesterday morning when a man in another vehicle forced the car she was in to stop at the corner of Hebert and 23rd (below).

There the man forced Austin and her companions out of their vehicle by gunpoint.

According to police, Austin and the suspect -- described only as a black male in his 20s -- got into an argument. The suspect then shot Austin, a resident of the 2500 block of Palm, in the chest. She was later pronounced dead at the hospital.

The suspect's car is described only as a gray or green four-door sedan. Anyone with information regarding this case is encouraged to call CrimeStoppers at 866-371-TIPS.

As of yesterday, St. Louis police say Austin was the 65th person killed in the city this year. At this point last year, the city had 62 murders.
