A website that tracks layoffs in the newspaper industry reports this week that seven employees were recently let go from the Suburban Journals.

According to the site Paper Cuts, four editorial staffers and three advertising employees have been fired form the chain of suburban weeklies. The website also reports that remaining Journals employees will be required to take a one-week furlough before October 1.

Since being acquired by Lee Enterprises as part of the Post-Dispatch purchase in 2005, the Journals has had several rounds of layoffs, including the firing of a reporter who took a bullet while working for the publication.

Daily RFT attempted to reach the Journals' new publisher, Tom Wiley, today. His receptionist told us he was out of town until Monday. Perhaps he is, or maybe he's just being, uhm, wily?
