Mayor Francis Slay has made a bet with Kansas City Mayor Mark Funkhouser this U.S. census season: Whose city will increase its census form mail-in response rate by the highest percentage?

If St. Louis wins, Slay stands to receive a case of Kansas City's finest local beer (we're guessing Boulevard?) and, even more important, some genuine KC barbecue.

Maybe Riverfront Times should come up with a similar agreement with The Pitch, our sister paper in Kansas City?

A fun census fact: For every one percent increase in mail-order responses, the Census Bureau saves $85 million. That translates into about $60-$70 per form.
