On Day St. Louis Declared Second-Most "Dangerous City", Four Separate Shootings

Thugs keep shooting holes in city's case that it's not a "dangerous" place.
  • Thugs keep shooting holes in city's case that it's not a "dangerous" place.
Every year it unfolds the same way:

  1. CQ Press releases its controversial list of the the nation's most crime-ridden towns, a ranking formerly known as "America's Most Dangerous Cities".
  2. St. Louis routinely ranks in the Top 5 of violent places.
  3. City officials dismiss the survey as sensational and false.

Such was the case yesterday. CQ released its finding that ranked St. Louis as having the second-highest per capita incidents of violent crime and a spokeswoman for Mayor Francis Slay was quick to respond calling the ranking "stupid" and "totally bogus."

Well, apparently the criminals out there didn't get the retort from the mayor's flak. That's because last night thugs in St. Louis shot four people in separate incidents. And, as is too often the case, police have few solid leads for finding the gunmen.

The first shooting occurred around 8:17 p.m. That's when a group of four males confronted a 20-year-old man in the 4500 block of Martin Luther King.

The men demanded property from the individual and then shot him in the back. The victim is currently listed in stable condition at a hospital.

Fifty minutes after that shooting, police got another call -- this one around 9:07 p.m. A man was walking to his apartment in the 3400 block of Hamilton (about a block south of the Goody Goody Diner) when he was approached by two men who displayed a gun.

The man ran and was shot several times. He is listed in critical condition.

Later that same hour -- around 9:30 p.m. -- a 25-year-old male was walking along the 4000 block of N. 20th Street when he stopped to talk to another man.

An argument ensued and the 25-year-old was shot in the shoulder and hip. He is listed in stable condition at a hospital.

Then just after midnight -- 12:19 a.m. -- police got another call regarding a shooting. They arrived at the 8600 block of Riverview to find a 29-year-old man lying on a front porch.
