Neighborhood to Consider Renaming Park in Honor of Mayor's Papa, Francis R. Slay Sr.

Members of the Ellendale Neighborhood Association received a letter this week asking them to consider renaming the Ellendale-Arsenal Park to Francis R. Slay, Sr. Park.

Alderman Bill Waterhouse (Ward 24) writes in the letter dated April 24 that the renaming would be "a nice thing for the park and Mr. Slay, Sr., who originally set everything in motion to create this park."

Slay Sr. -- now in his 80s -- is the Ward 23 committeeman for the Democratic party and once served as the city's recorder of deeds and as a state representative.

The Ellendale-Arenal Park was originally in the city's 23rd ward but changed to the 24th ward during redistricting.

Waterhouse tells me today that newly elected Ward 23 alderman, Joe Vaccaro, requested him to ask the neighborhood association to change the park's name.

"I'm okay with it," says Waterhouse, "but it's up to the neighborhood. I don't want them thinking that the name change means the park is moving back to the 23rd Ward."
