Wednesday, April 8: Morning's Newz

Mayor Francis Slay easily won a third term yesterday, collecting 60 percent of the vote and defeating Independent challenger Maida Coleman who garnered just 30 percent of votes.

In other election news, maverick Town & Country mayoral candidate John Hoffmann lost handily to incumbent Jon Dalton. Though my favorite election results occurred up in Lincoln County. That's where the dead guy trounced his challenger by a margin of 9 to 1 in the mayor's race in Winfield.

Former St. Louis Fire Chief Sherman George did his best yesterday to throw a monkey wrench in Mayor Slay's run for re-election. The ousted fire chief filed suit yesterday against Slay and the city on claims that his 2007 demotion was racially motivated and violated the Missouri Human Rights Act.

In sports, the Cardinals made up for their opening day loss Monday, defeating the Pittsburgh Pirates yesterday 9-3. Albert Pujols, Chris Duncan and Yadier Molina all homered in the contest. Also downtown last night, the University of Connecticut's women's basketball team won the NCAA championship.

It's April 7, a.k.a. World Health Day
