Former state legislator Scott Muschany (R-Frontenac) may have won the mock trial his attorneys put on last week. But it appears that he's losing the real trial this week on charges of deviate sexual assault and exposing himself to a minor. Yesterday a 14-year-old girl testified that she awoke in her bedroom to find a naked Muschany putting her hand on his penis. Muschany called no witnesses. Closing arguments are today.

Federal, state and local law enforcers held a news conference yesterday demanding that East St. Louis officials amend the city's liquor laws that allow bars and taverns to operate all-night long. The group wants the bars to close around the same time as most St. Louis watering holes -- 1 a.m.

Dr. Fred Duhart passed away last week of a heart-attack. For decades Dr. Duhart was the only area physician who would deliver babies at home and -- until last year -- the only legal option for women wanting homebirths. That changed in 2008 when the Missouri General Assembly passed legislation in allowing mid-wives to practice in the state.
