Count Nelly among those who think that anger over Travis Scott's planned performance at the Super Bowl on February 3 is overblown. In fact, our hometown hero says he'd "probably" play the halftime show himself.
Scott, of course, has faced criticism for agreeing to perform at the show despite the NFL's treatment of Colin Kaepernick, the 49er who famously took a knee and found himself without a job. Rihanna, Cardi B and other A-listers have reportedly taken a pass
But Nelly says he'd consider trading in his "Pimp Juice
" for Gatorade.
Chatting with TMZ at LAX
, the St. Louis rapper said he doesn't see what the big deal over the halftime show is. He argues that continuing to watch Monday Night Football is harming Kaepernick's cause more than any halftime performance.
"If you're trying to make a stand against the NFL, you should probably not watch it on Sunday or you should not go to the games," he said. "The halftime show is irrelevant."
As for whether Kaepernick was right to criticize Scott, Nelly stuck to his point, TMZ reported. "I wouldn't say that he has a point in the sense of ... I mean he has his own reasons but again ... if you watch the NFL every Sunday, you support your team, that's how they make their money."
Hard to argue with that logic — the Root made a similar argument earlier this week
, and no less than Gladys Knight
has agreed to take the stage in addition to Scott. Still, Nelly likely opened himself up to some scorn for telling TMZ he'd "probably" play the show himself.
Now we're left wondering: Would St. Louis ride wit
Nelly to the Super Bowl?
