Ryan Koenig, a longtime fixture of Pokey LaFarge's band and one of the original South City Three, has been hospitalized after being struck by a car during a tour stop in Charleston, South Carolina.
According to a press release from St. Louis' Big Muddy Records, which puts out Koenig's solo material, Koenig was "seriously injured" on Tuesday, December 5, when he was "struck by a vehicle on the sidewalk." Koenig is reportedly stable and recovering.
LaFarge shared news of the accident from his official Facebook page on Wednesday night, saying Koenig would be unable to complete the tour following an "accident."
In response to a question from
regarding how and why, exactly, a car was driving on the sidewalk, Big Muddy Records' owner Chris Baricevic writes, "The only details that can be shared regarding the incident at this time are contained in the press release. These are the expressed wishes of the family and legal counsel. Thank you for respecting."
A crowd-funding effort to help assist with medical bills has been launched
, and has raised nearly $15,000 of its $20,000 goal in less than 24 hours.
From the campaign's "story" section:
Everyone who knows Ryan has come to love and appreciate his constant outpour of positivity, in addition to the endless stream of beautiful music that he creates. He has become a fixture in St. Louis and, through his travels as a member of Pokey LaFarge's band, has become revered worldwide.
It is no secret that Ryan is a real treasure and a truly wonderful human being. Now, as members of Ryan's community, we have the chance to pitch in and return the love. Through his music and his presence, he has given us all so much. Let's make sure that when Ryan returns home to begin his recovery, he won't have to worry about piling medical bills. While we don't know yet exactly what those expenses will amount to, we know it won't be cheap.
Help us show Ryan how much we love him and help him along his journey! Let's get that boy back on his feet with a harmonica in his hands.
LaFarge and his remaining bandmates are pressing on with their tour, and are set to perform in Nashville tonight. Later this month the group will take over Off Broadway for an impressive four-night run from December 26 to 29.
Here's hoping Koenig will be able to join them for those shows.
