Ferry Corsten has achieved what many musicians strive for: longevity. The Dutch producer and DJ has a career dating back to 1991 yet remains at the forefront of electronic dance music. When he's not touring the world or releasing albums, Corsten heads up "Ferry's Fix," a monthly DJ mix broadcasted worldwide on various radio stations, and "Corsten's Countdown," an EDM music chart show that also has a global audience. RFT Music caught up with the Dutchman via email before his show at Europe Nightclub (710 North 15th Street; 314-221-8427) to discuss his newest project with fellow producer Markus Schulz and the things he dislikes about his job.
Evan Jones: How did you first start getting interested in producing electronic music?
Ferry Corsten: I have always been interested in music since I was a little kid. I started by washing cars to earn some money to buy my first equipment. I have been hooked ever since.
What makes The Netherlands an epicenter for electronic music and for electronic producers/DJs?
I'm not sure really. I think Dutch people are very down to earth and work really hard.
After over 20 years, what about DJing and producing do you still enjoy? What don't you enjoy after 20 years?
The creativity that I can put into my music will never bore me. I'm excited about every new track that I produce. Also spinning them for the first time and see a crowd go mental is something that I will always enjoy. It's not that I don't enjoy it but the traveling can be a bit boring sometimes.
What is the wildest thing you've seen happen at a show over your career?
Too many to name.
Which younger producers and DJs are you listening to these days?
Normally when I am not working I just put on the radio to clear my mind from EDM for a change.
Are there any new projects we can expect from you later in 2013?
I will be hosting the Corsten's Countdown Summer Special on June 2nd. This is an 8 hour broadcast of Corsten's Countdown where the listeners will decide what I will play. They can let me know what they want to hear via www.corstenscountdown.com. I am also working together with Markus Schulz on our new project New World Punx. I will be producing new music with Markus and play back to back sets with him under this new alias.
