We're just going to let that flyer up there speak for itself: The first-annual St. Louis Underground Music Fest (S.L.U.M.) takes over Atomic Cowboy and the Fox Hole at Atomic Cowboy this Saturday starting at 2 p.m. Admission is $5 (with a $2 minor surcharge). The all-day festival spotlights pretty much anyone who's a major player in the local hip-hop scene. Full press release after the jump.
More than thirty years of St. Louis' music history and hip-hop culture will grace the stages and spaces of Atomic Cowboy.
Representing the four elements of hip-hop culture at its finest, tightly scheduled performing acts include: The Force, Jia Davis and The Committee, Family Affair, Earthworms, Midwest Avengers, Rockwell Knuckles, Spark1duh!, Illphonics, Corey Black, Nite Owl, and Scripts N' Screws.
Local deejay favorites scheduled to session include: DJ Needles, Chilly C, DJ Anisto, DJ Wood, DJ Uptown, and DJ Spec.
"We're talking about seeing a [DJ] Needles set, to [DJ] Anisto, to Chilly C," said John Harrington, better known as BC from Midwest Avengers. "You've got Ruckus Crew and Mic Checka, to Rockwell Knuckles, to the Treez, to [Midwest Avengers] and Illphonics."
S.L.U.M.FEST will also include "four on four" B-boy battles, a producer battle, and live art performed by ArtDimensions.
"SLUMfest is a celebration of all four elements of Hip-Hop," said Lyfestile, local emcee hero, afficianado, fan favorite, and member of The Force, Altered St8s, and Plan B. "It also celebrates those who partiipate in and appreciate the culture. It's a unique experience for our scene, because we want to acknowledge the contributions of people from our neck of the woods, whether they are indie artist or platinum sellers."
Lyfestile continued. "We're doing it in the spirit of unity, and it's not just about rap. Deejays, b-boys and girls, [graf] writers and emcees [all] get a chance to shine."
John Harrington continued. "Let me put it to you like this: If I plan it right, I can see Intellect Emcee, listen to Chilly [C] dig in the crates, catch Earthworms, Ebony Eyez, and T-Menace, a battle or two, some live graf[fitti], and still play a show, all in the same spot, all on one day."
The 2010 S.L.U.M.fest is all-ages, plays across three stages, and will run from 2pm to 2am at Atomic Cowboy, 4140 Manchester Avenue (between Boyle and Sarah.) All-day admission is $5 ($2 surcharge for minors. patrons must be 21 and older to purchase/consume alcoholic beverages.) Restaurant/Bar will be open throughout event.
