Tonight: Illspitta Sickflow and Hipper Than Hip Hip-Hop @ 2720 Cherokee

The best part about 2720 Cherokee is its intrinsic blend of art and music. Most shows feature artists painting live next to the stage and there are several beautiful works from local ArtDimensions artists scattered around the expansive, dimly lit space. (ArtDimensions is the organization that owns and operates the gallery on the second floor.) Even the stage itself is framed by a mishmash of broken electronics that makes it a sort of permanent performance art installation.

The ambience is especially pertinent tonight because the local hip-hop lineup consists of several multi-talented artists. They're all rappers first and foremost but, refreshingly, none are limited to a particular genre or medium.

Illspitta Sickflow, as his the name suggests, is adept at penning hyper-literate but hood at heart jams. His songs run the gamut from THC-fueled trip-hop to lighthearted, sing-along-friendly summer anthems to vocoder and synthesizer digital mind-blowers.
Soul Tyde alum Thelonius Kryptonite bills himself as "not just a emcee but a poet, writer, and musician" and says he fuses the "collective sounds of soul, jazz, and funk."

The dudes from Scripts 'N Screwz -- a 2010 RFT music awards nominee for best Best hip-hop artist (Group/collective) -- dabble in film and make very slick music videos to go with their unique twist on genre-fusing underground.
