Late Tuesday, singer-songwriter Freedy Johnston confirmed a St. Louis show at Off Broadway on Thursday, February 11. Tickets are $10 for those over 21, $13 for anyone under, and the show starts at 9 p.m. Johnston hasn't played here in quite a long time, I believe, but he has good reason to play here now: Rain On the City, his newest album and first in eight years. A songwriting clinic, City is moody, optimistic and pensive in all the right places, with enough brisk acoustic guitars, plaintive melodies and the occasional jazzy horn to keep away monotony.
Patty Griffin's St. Louis show has neither a venue nor a date yet, but her official website notes that our fair city is a stop on a tour being routed in support of her new album, Downtown Church. All shows are with roots-country artist Buddy Miller. We'll update this with info, when it's known.
