What hasn't been announced but is heavily rumored around the Internets is that the Police, who are supposedly planning a global reunion tour this summer, may also be performing. (Coachella's pre-sale password is "Roxanne," after all.)
(Kevin says he knows of a big reunion happening but is sworn to secrecy, so checking his blog throughout the week would be wise.)
However, the disconnect between the headliners and the rest of the acts attending (save for Bjrk) has never seemed greater (and, uh, Tool headlined a past Coachella). The music played by Rage and RHCP, while wholly influential on modern rock radio to this day, arguably doesn't appeal to the same crowd that digs Peaches, Coco Rosie, Rufus Wainwright, Interpol and the Arcade Fire (all of whom are also confirmed). In fact, the two acts stick out like a sore, fratboy thumb among the rest of the lineup, which reads like a Pitchfork All-Star team (see below).
A reunion of Smashing Pumpkins which is also heavily rumored; Billy Corgan has been actively seeking out new band members to join him and original drummer Jimmy Chamberlain would fit better with Coachella's "Man, the 1990s were AWESOME" aesthetic, as the Pumpkins' music possesses the creative cred Rage and RHCP lack (the same stuff that Bauhaus and Gang of Four had when Coachella was on a 1980s nostalgia kick OK, they're always on that kick). Not to mention that the Pumpkins' music has aged so much better than Rage's rap-rock political grandstanding and the Chili Peppers' increasingly generic tunes (seriously, can anyone tell the group's singles apart anymore?).
Other notable acts confirmed include: Air, Jarvis Cocker of Pulp (with band), Placebo, The Good, the Bad and the Queen (the supergroup featuring Blur's Damon Albarn and the Clash's Paul Simonon), Arctic Monkeys, Sonic Youth, The Rapture, !!!, Jack's Mannequin, Lupe Fiasco, Lily Allen, Fountains of Wayne, Gillian Welch, Soulwax, Grizzly Bear, Junior Boys, the Kooks, Tilly and the Wall, Andrew Bird, Nickel Creek (back together so soon?), Explosions in the Sky, Silversun Pickups, CSS, Girl Talk, Kaiser Chiefs, Regina Spektor, Gogol Bordello, LCD Soundsystem, Travis, the Black Keys and DJ Shadow.
