Sad news for fans of Pi Pizzeria: There is now one less location of the St. Louis-based pizza chain.
The restaurant, which is best-known for its deep-dish pizza made with cornmeal crust, closed its Bethesda, Maryland, outpost last week, according to Eater. A staffer told the site that the location, which opened outside Washington, D.C., in April 2016, would likely close by Friday, February 2 — Sunday, February 4 at the latest. It is no longer listed as a location on the pizzeria's website.
Chris Sommers, the chain's owner, didn't respond to our email seeking comment.
This is not the first location outside the St. Louis area that Pi Pizzeria has opened — and then closed. In 2015, Pi Pizzeria closed its Miami outpost less than three months after opening, blaming a surprisingly slow off-season that sent numerous restaurants in the area to the chopping block, as St. Louis Magazine
reported. Pi opened a Cincinnati location in 2014, but it closed its doors last year, as Cincinnati.com
Pi still has one location outside the St. Louis area — in Penn Quarter in Washington, D.C.
And, of course, St. Louis customers have locations in the Central West End, Delmar Loop, downtown, Kirkwood and Chesterfield to suit their cravings.
