Nixta, Vicia Are Among the 50 Best New Restaurants in the U.S.

It's about to get even harder to get a reservation at Nixta or Vicia: Bon Appetit chose the two St. Louis hotspots today as among the 50 best new restaurants in the entire country.

Nixta (1621 Tower Grove Avenue, 314-899-9000), which is owned by Ben Poremba and helmed by chef Tello Carreon, opened last November in the city's Botanical Heights neighborhood. It was joined this March by Vicia (4260 Forest Park Avenue, 314-553-9239). Owned by Michael and Tara Gallina, Vicia is located in the city's Cortex district, on the edge of the Central West End.

Of Nixta, Bon Appetit writes, "Go here for ambitious cooking that combines bold flavors from various regions of Mexico with stellar ingredients. That’s the genius of chef Tello Carreon, a native of Guanajuato, Mexico. The vibe is that cool, colorful, always lively restaurant that everyone talks about in Oaxaca ... except it’s in St. Louis."

Bon Appetit also had high praise for Vicia. "The vibe is grown-up and polished through and through—with all the warmth you’d expect from our country’s heartland. The menu is exciting and unusual enough to intrigue a younger crowd; the space and service are sophisticated enough to please older diners too."

Worth noting: With two restaurants on the list of 50, St. Louis actually has one more "best new" winner than both Minneapolis and Kansas City — as well (gasp!) Manhattan. (Yes, New York City as a whole still has us beat, since Brooklyn alone has three restaurants on the list, but if you're looking strictly at Manhattan, we win.)

Both Nixta and Vicia are now in the running to be named among the ten best new restaurants in the U.S. by Bon Appetit, a list set for release August 15.
