  • Florissant residents will now have to travel to St. Charles or Brentwood for their "puffer" fix.
North county fans of Fort Taco (multiple locations including 8106 Manchester Road, Brentwood; 314-647-2391) received some sad news this past Tuesday: The Florissant location of the popular taco shop has permanently closed.

Fort Taco shared the news in a statement on its Facebook page, blaming the closure on the "constraints of the Florissant location." According to the post, the restaurant's placement in a strip mall made it difficult for people to find, which ultimately drove down business.

The news of the Florissant location's closure is another blow in the aspiring fast food chain's expansion plans. In May, owners pulled the plug on the Chesterfield Mall store after just five months, noting that the mall food court channel was not the right fit — a fact the company realized only after opening.

But the Florissant location, which opened in December 2015, seemed to tick all of the right boxes for the burgeoning chain: Space for a drive-thru, indoor seating (which is lacking at the flagship Brentwood location), and placement directly off a major thoroughfare. And in May of this year, co-owner Elizabeth Sedlock said the location was "killing it."

Fort Taco's newest location in St. Charles, which opened this past July, and its original spot in Brentwood both remain open.

Following the Chesterfield closure, Sedlock admitted that she anticipated such growing pains as the restaurant expanded. "We're a young company and we're figuring it out."

We have reached out to Sedlock and will update this post as more information becomes available. The restaurant's full Facebook statement follows.

We have some news and it will be upsetting for our loyal customers in Florissant. Due to the constraints of the location in Florissant, with much regret, we had to close the Florissant location for good. We are a small company and are always learning. One thing we have realized is that the most successful stores for our business model are about stand alone, access, and visibility. You can't be successful if no one can find you! We appreciate all our customers in Florissant and are sad to say goodbye. However, in better news, both our Brentwood and St. Charles locations are doing great and will be bringing you our yummy food for years to come. Thanks for the understanding and for your continued business.
