We've all heard the saying about April showers, and unfortunately it seems like this month is dead set on keeping with tradition. Still, that's no excuse to stay home when spring is just getting started. Continue on for our food-related recommendations.
Monday (Apr. 6):
Wash. U.'s Jon Lowe will teach you all about that most pillowy of pastas using four different fillings and complementary sauces: lobster, wild mushroom, shrimp and herb paired with red sauce, white sauce, saffron sauce and pesto. From 6 to 8:30 p.m. Class is $60 per person; register here.
Tuesday (Apr. 7):
Instead of wine, this week Remy's Kitchen is pairing with local distillery Big O to create a menu to go with its ginger liqueur. Start with Geisert Farms pork pot stickers with Big O dipping sauce and a Big O Caipirinha (Cachaca, Big O, lime, brown sugar). Next it's seared striped bass on glass noodles in a lemongrass kaffir lime broth and roasted shiitake mushrooms with a Born to Run (vodka, Big O, elderflower, fennel pear shrub). Last is pan-roasted duck breast on Napa cabbage slaw with Big O hoisin glaze and the Thoroughfare (Rittenhouse Rye, Big O, Aperol, orange bitters). From 6:30 to 8 p.m. Dinner is $38 per person; call 314-726-5757 for reservations.
Civil Life will be releasing two new beers today at the Soulard pizzeria -- beers that aren't even available at Civil Life's brewery. The Angel and the Sword and Big Scottish Wee Bit Heavy will both be on tap when Pizzeoli opens at 11 a.m. Catch our own columnist and Civil Life barman Patrick Hurley there during lunch and brewers Brandon Stern and Dylan Mosley will be there at dinnertime. Tap takeover will last all day. Admission is free.
Wednesday (Apr. 8):
Slow Food St. Louis, the Schlafly Farmers' Market and Seeds of Hope Farm are teaming up to educate people about using SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) to buy farmers' market food and CSA shares. Speakers include Schlafly Farmers' Market manager Brian DeSmet at Seeds of Hope Farm's Gabriel Hahn. From 7:30 to 9 p.m. Admission is free.
Thursday (Apr. 9):
Scape's wine director Travis Hebrank is hosting a series of wine and chocolate tastings with Audrey Scherrer, owner of Bittersweet Artisan Truffles. The class aims to "explore new flavor combinations" with six pairings. You can also come early or stay late to get 20 percent off dinner, drinks or appetizers at Scape. There are additional sessions on April 21 and 28. From 7 to 8:30 p.m. Class is $40 per person; register here.
You already know 360 has one of the best views of downtown St. Louis, but local craft brews make that view even more delicious. Sample beers from Perennial, Schlafly,Urban Chestnut, Sam Adams, Civil Life, 4 Hands, Kirkwood Station and more and enjoy eats from some "local purveyors."
